Friends of the Mississippi River x Cooperates Gardening

Our July Cooperates partner is Friends of the Mississippi River, and we’re excited to be partnering with them for a volunteer gardening opportunity!

Volunteers will be working at Ole Olson Park, a Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board property north of the Broadway bridge along West River Parkway.

Since 2015, FMR has been working to restore two acres of land adjacent to the river to native prairie, complete with a diverse assemblage of grasses and wildflowers that provide habitat for pollinators and help improve water quality.

Volunteers will assist in the restoration by removing invasive plants from the prairie, as well as tending and mulching a large prairie demonstration garden. The event will be rain or shine, and volunteers should dress for outdoor work (closed toe shoes, long pants, etc). Sun protection and bug spray are optional but encouraged. All gloves and tools will be provided.
