When Duluth Brewing & Malting just started making beer in 1898, the legend goes, a moose wandered through the brewhouse yard, inspiring founder Reiner Hoch to label his brew “Moose Brand Beer.” DB&M thrived until Prohibition and reemerged in the 1930s with its Royal Bohemian brand, which later became Royal 57. Fearing it would be called “The Ketchup Beer” due to the popularity of Heinz 57, it was renamed Royal 58, but its own popularity wasn’t enough to keep the beer flowing after 1966.
