Brewing in Duluth and Superior began in 1859, but it wasn’t until 1869 that someone started using Lake Superior Water in the brewing process. Beginning in the 1930s, the Twin Ports’ breweries began marketing their beers by reminding drinkers they were made with chemically pure Lake Superior water. And it wasn’t just hype: local brewmasters knew that Lake Superior water is special, allowing brewers to make beer without adding chemicals to treat the water.
